Asian Medical Tourism Destinations Ranked by English Proficiency
Spring, 2011
Thinking of traveling to East, Southeast, or South Asia as a medical tourist for cosmetic plastic surgery? Worried about your host's ability to communicate with you in English? If so, you might be interested in EF Education First EPI rankings in which the largest countries in the world were for the first time ranked by the ability of their populations to speak and understand functional English.
 |
London's EF Education First is the world's largest privately held education company specializing in language training, educational travel, academic degrees, and cultural exchange. |
The rankings dispelled some popular misconceptions about English aptitude in several Asian countries. For instance, India, with its history as a British colony and reputation as a popular outsourcing destination for the West, scored lower than China, a country commonly associated with poor English skills.
Likewise, Hong Kong, a long-time territory of the U.K., scored essentially the same as Japan and South Korea, where the public and private study of English by students and adults is widespread.
Malaysia topped the list of Asian countries and was the only country outside of Europe to achieve a level of "High Proficiency." English has been a required subject there for all school children for many years.

(Singapore, where English is the main language, and the Philippines, where English is one of the two official languages, were not rated since their abilities with English are already known to be excellent.)

Malaysia
Moderate Proficiency
Hong Kong
South Korea
Japan
Low Proficiency

China
India
Very Low Proficiency
Indonesia
Vietnam
Thailand
APSG Comment: While it's easy for English-speaking judges to slap labels like "Low" and "Very Low" on far-away foreign populations, the only possible level that could begin to describe the proficiency of the United States population and most Western medical tourists with any language other than barely-passable English is "Zero."
