For Asian Americans, the eyes have it
The American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery has released statistics from a survey of its members for year 2009. All but 2% of respondents practice in the United States. Participants were asked for their opinions about the most frequently performed facial cosmetic surgery procedures among several different ethnic groups.
|
Not surprisingly, the most popular procedure among Asian Americans was eyelid surgery (53% of respondents) followed by rhinoplasty (39% of respondents).
The Asian American emphasis on eyelid surgery was especially pronounced compared with Caucasians, Hispanics, and African Americans.
Facelift and chin augmentation were much less popular. Other well-known Asian facial operations such as cheek reduction and jaw reduction were performed too seldom by AAFPRS members to be considered.
|
Asian Americans accounted for 6% of cosmetic surgery patients in 2009, a drop from 8% in 2008. However, more than 80% of surgeon respondents felt that ethnic plastic surgery was likely to increase noticeably in coming years.
Most members of the AAFPRS have completed a residency in otolaryngology-head-and-neck surgery (commonly known as ENT), although membership is also open to general plastic surgeons. Member surgeons focus primarily on plastic surgery of the face and neck.
