Cambodian Prime Minister warns against cosmetic care

While most governments in East and Southeast Asia have dramatically ramped up their efforts to promote highly-lucrative elective cosmetic services to patients near and far, Cambodia seems to be the lone exception.

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen has warned women to beware of the country's lax medical standards and poor oversight of its booming cosmetic surgery industry.

Citing a recent case of a Cambodian woman who died after receiving an injection, Hun Sen urged women to be careful or they might "go into a coffin."

"The problem," he added, "is whether or not (we) understand clearly the materials or chemical substances that are used for beauty surgery."

A bigger problem, however, may be the manner in which these materials are used. Although cosmetic surgeons are required to register with the health ministry and have proper qualifications, officials admit that poorly trained, unlicensed doctors operate illegally and freely.

Discouraging going under the knife, the prime minister said, "I would like to appeal to all women -- not only single women, but also married women -- that it is good to keep natural beauty."
