Kirkus Reviews describes the novel as "a lighthearted and thought-provoking look at a serious teen issue."

Na, according to School Library Journal, "explores issues of beauty and ethnic identity with sensitivty and wit."

VOYA notes that "the novel can spark dialogue with young adults about society's obsession with certain physical attributes (thin bodies and long, straight hair) and its disdain for others (ethnic features, curly hair, Rubenesque figures, and so on)."
