Taiwan to increase competition for medical tourists

January, 2010

Watch out South Korea. While presently the frontrunner in East Asian plastic surgery, Taiwan is intent on drawing its share of big money from patients seeking high-tech medical care at low cost.

The flow of patients into South Korea has picked up since restrictions on overseas advertising were eased. Korean surgeons are already aggressively marketing their services in every direction--from Russia to the north to all the surrounding East Asian countries.

Taiwan wants to cash in as well and had begun targeting China's emerging middle class, especially since the two share a common language. Between 2008 and 2009, the volume of cosmetic procedures in Taiwan tripled.
