Compared with people of European inheritance, many Asian women have flatter buttocks with decreased overall volume and projection due to less-developed gluteus maximus muscles. While a slim profile has always been valued, an ample buttocks contributes to a more voluptuous appearance. With the South Korean promotion on S-line figures, more than a few Asian women have begun exploring options for enhancing the derrière.
While solid silicone gluteal implants have existed for years, complications from surgery are not rare. Many plastic surgeons now prefer to use injection techniques to add volume and reshape in cases not in need of significant reconstruction (for instance, after injuries or malignancy). Several "filler" materials are available.
Injection of various synthetic products offers a minimally invasive way of achieving buttocks augmentation. Such procedures are quick and relatively simple to perform. although the result may be only semi-permanent.
Instead, some plastic surgeons have begun to use fat obtained by liposuction from the patient's own body as the filler substance, a procedure that goes by the name "Brazilian butt lift" but works just as well in those of Asian descent. A similar operation is used for breast augmentation by fat transfer. By removing fat from where is is not appreciated (thighs, waist, abdomen, etc.), an added benefit is multi-area body contouring. The disadvantage is cost and the need for considerable expertise in fat grafting to achieve full advantage from this technique. If not performed with expertise, the procedure can yield disappointing results. Thus, even in Brazil solid implants are still in wide use.
The "lift" in butt lift comes mostly from volume augmentation that creates a natural up-lift secondary to added projection. A few surgeons, however, insert lifting threads or sutures in cases that require more help.
According to one study of a large number of women across many nationalities, the cross-cultural "universal ideal" was defined as a buttocks that is 1.4 times the circumference of the waist. Of course, size alone means little when compared to overall shape as well as harmonious integration with the rest of the body's natural contours.
