For a protruded, overly prominent chin, the middle part of the chin bone is removed from an incision made either inside of the mouth or through the skin just under the tip of the chin.

The remaining upper and lower portions of bone are attached to each other using metallic wire and plates to preserve the overall chin shape, muscle connections, and blood supply.
