For a mildly protruded, overly prominent chin, the middle part of the chin bone may be removed from an incision made either inside of the mouth or through the skin just under the tip of the chin.
The remaining upper and lower portions of bone are attached to each other using metallic wire and plates to preserve the overall chin shape, muscle connections, and blood supply.

In the more pronounced long face syndrome, lower facial length is increased, the base of the nose is constricted, the teeth and gums are over-exposed, the upper lip may turn out, and the chin appears too prominent (mandibular prognathism).
Correction requires orthognathic surgery known as "double jaw surgery" in which both the upper and lower jaw bones are fractured, repositioned, and wired. |
