Section: Asian Breast Surgery
While nipple overdevelopment, or nipple hypertrophy, is an uncommon breast deformity, it occurs more frequently in people of Asian descent.
High nipple elevation can be associated with irritation from clothing but also pose a cosmetic imbalance in women with naturally small breasts.
Nipple reduction is a simple and safe surgical procedure that reliably delivers accurate results with good symmetry.
Designed to reduce both excessive forward projection of the nipple as well as the less frequent problem of excessive width, the operation may be performed as a stand-alone procedure or in conjunction with simultaneous breast augmentation or breast lift surgery.
(Enlargement of the areola, the pigmented skin surrounding the nipple, is a separate issue that can be corrected by surgical trimming if desired.)
Aesthetic results are typically excellent with minimal scarring. Both nipple innervation and structural integrity of the milk ducts are preserved, and there is no interference with later breast feeding.
Patient satisfaction after nipple reduction is reported to be high.
